Camp at Southern Cross Stables includes:
Horsemanship Skills Safely approach, halter, lead & tie a horse; groom the horse, learn the parts of the horse; tack up; stall cleaning and barn chores.
- Riding
Campers who are beginners will learn to mount and dismount; ride at the walk on the lunge line; halt properly and accurately from the walk; work on confidence building exercises and stretches; guide the horse at the walk; and walk the horse accurately over patterns of poles and cones. Trot work will be introduced on the lunge line. Campers will be evaluated for higher skill levels, and work based on their abilities.
Supervised Swimming Campers will need to bring a bathing suit, towel, rubber flip flops or sandals, and a bag for their damp swim gear.
- Games, activities and videos
Campers will have age-appropriate, noncompetitive recreational and educational sessions .
Adjustments will be made based on the age of the camper.
Dates for 2011 camps are:
- Camp 1 ... June 13-June 17
Camp 2 ... June 20-June 24
- Camp 3 ... July 4-July 8
- Camp 4 ... July 11-July 15
- Camp 5 ... July 18-July 22
- Camp 6 ... August 1-August 5
Camp hours: 9am to 2pm with extended hours available for an additional fee.
Cost: Camp is $275.00 per week and must be paid in advance. Camp is available on a first come, first served basis.
Ages: Campers must be at least 6 years old.
Clothing: An ASTM/SEI Certified helmet will be provided and MUST be worn while riding. Campers may NOT ride in shorts or skirts. Ideally, they will wear riding boots and riding pants; they may wear tennis shoes and comfortable jeans. They may bring shorts to wear after riding. Flip flops and sandals are NOT allowed any wear around the barn.
Release Form: Parents are required to sign a release form prior to the first day of camp.
Riding Instructors and counselors: Instructors are Southern Cross' regular riding instructors. They are highly experienced in teaching in all levels of riding and are certified. Counselors will be assigned to assist instructors. All counselors are teenagers with experience in riding and handling horses.
Lunch: Campers will need to bring their lunch, which will be refrigerated. Campers may bring a drink of choice from home. Cold drinking water will be provided all day.
Photographs: Campers will have a professional photo session taken with their horse and will have the opportunity to purchase photos at the end of camp.
Worksheets: Campers will receive a number of work sheets and a binder.
